Famous Moments & People in loanDepot Park History

  • José Fernández, RIP -- Coming from Cuba and drafted 14th overall in 2011, José Fernández embodied the heart and soul of the mid-2010s Marlins. He won 2013 NL Rookie of the Year and earned two All-Star selections. Sadly, Fernández passed away in a boating accident on September 25, 2016.

  • The First Game -- April 4, 2012 -- Despite the visiting St. Louis Cardinals winning, this game marked the beginning of a new era for Miami baseball with the opening of Marlins Park.

  • Ichiro, the Marlin! -- Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki, primarily known for his time with the Seattle Mariners, played his final three full seasons with the Marlins from 2015 to 2017. He would finish his career in Seattle, appearing in 17 total games over the 2018-2019 seasons.

  • The Tanks -- Among the most unusual features in any major league stadium, Marlins Park featured the only backstop made from actual fish tanks in MLB history.

  • The Home Run Sculpture -- Debuting on Opening Day 2012, the 75-foot home run sculpture activated for 27 seconds each time a Marlins player hit a home run. Originally placed in left-center field, it was relocated outside the stadium before the 2019 season.

  • The 2017 All-Star Game -- Seattle Mariners infielder Robinson Canó earned MVP honors in the Midsummer Classic at Marlins Park. Canó's 10th-inning home run gave the "visiting" American League team a 2-1 victory.

  • Hendo's No-No! -- September 29, 2013 -- Henderson Alvarez threw a no-hitter at Marlins Park in the final game of the 2013 season. The no-hitter concluded in one of the most unusual ways imaginable: Alvarez was in the on-deck circle when Tigers pitcher Luke Putkonen's wild pitch allowed Giancarlo Stanton to score the winning run in the bottom of the 9th.

  • Eddie's Emotional No-No! -- June 3, 2017 -- Edinson Volquez, known for his easygoing personality and sense of humor, threw a no-hitter for the Marlins against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The achievement came on what would have been the 26th birthday of his friend and former Kansas City Royals teammate, Yordano Ventura, who had passed away in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic on January 17, 2017.

  • The outfield of Yelich, Stanton, and Ozuna -- A remarkable collection of talent that suggested tremendous potential for the franchise.

  • Barry Bonds, Hitting Coach -- Though it may be a forgotten footnote for some, Barry Bonds served as the Marlins hitting coach for one season in 2016.
