Famous Moments & People in Great American Ball Park History
Joey Votto – There is not a close second! Votto, the 2012 NL MVP, played all 17 of his big league seasons with the Reds. He’s one of the most unique personalities the game of baseball has ever seen. He’s hilariously funny, yet also extremely focused and serious about the game. His teammates loved him!
Ken Griffey Jr.- Maybe there is a close second! – Absolutely one of the best players in the history of baseball, Ken Griffey Jr. played 9 of his 22 Hall of Fame seasons with the Reds, six of them coming at GABP.
The 2012 Team
The First Game – March 31st, 2003 – The best Opening Day in baseball, by far, is in Cincinnati, and I can safely say there is not a REMOTELY close second. The Pirates blow the Reds out by a 10-1 score, but baseball is reborn in a GREAT baseball city.
“He hit it a ton, and it’s gone!” – Marty Brennaman, calling Jay Bruce’s walkoff homer to win the NL Central for the Reds on September 28th, 2010. – Outfielder Jay Bruce homers to lead off the 9th against Astros lefty Tim Byrdak, giving the Reds the division title.
The ToddFather wins the Derby! Todd Frazier, one of the most popular players in Great American Ballpark history, takes the crown at the Home Run Derby in 2015 at his home ballpark. Frazier beats Dodgers OF Joc Pederson in the final round as fireworks shoot off and the fans scream for their hometown player.
Rosie Red, Gapper, Mr. Red, and Mr. Redlegs! Cincinnati has some the of most creative, fun, and enthusiastic mascots in the game. It takes a lot to stand out as a mascot, but the Reds are in my own personal top-3.
Barry Larkin, Hall of Fame player turned TV Broadcaster, and a damn good one! – On the field, Larkin played his entire, 19-year career with the Reds, winning the 1990 World Series, the 1995 NL MVP Award, three Gold Glove Awards, nine Silver Slugger Awards, a Clemente Award, and 12 All-Star appearances. One of the best shortstops to ever play the game, Larkin led the team during the first two seasons of GABP.
Marty Brennaman – The Voice of the Reds…and your childhood!
Opening Day in Cincinnati, Every Year – There is no better city in all of baseball for Opening Day than Cincinnati, Ohio. Plus, they open the season at home every year.
